calcutta: jamil akhtar, who was recently arrested from his mofidul islam road residence under beniapukur police station in east calcutta for his alleged ''foreign links'' had acted as the facilitator to the hijackers of indian airlines ic-814, investigations have revealed. speaking to toins, city police additional commissioner damodar sarongi said, "the man, most-probably, acted as a local agent for the smooth transit of the hijackers from bangladesh to nepal via west bengal against a handsome compensation." besides providing safe passage to the hijackers, akhtar might have established a communication channel with the miscreants till the hijacking drama was over, the investigators suspected.
but the additional commissioner, who is personally handling the case, said," the person is no way involved in amarnath massacre. so far, there has been no such evidences to link him with banned militant organisation hizbul mujahidden, nor we have any information that he has received any arms training at pak-occupied kashmir", sarongi added. earlier on thursday night akhtar was arrested from his house while he was sleeping with his wife and two sons. he was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate of sealdah court where he was remanded to 10 days police custody. he was masquerading as a small refrigerator repairing workshop owner at rifle range road, and had travelled bangladesh and dubai several times recently.
